What you said about self awareness really made me reflect on the stories I love, because I actually love them. Because they're unapologetically weird and goofy, and they focus all of their runtime on saying what they have to say. It's not that the story doesn't realize it, it's that it embraces its weird traits without worrying about wether or not the public will understand it beyond the surface level. I guess there's some confidence in that, compared to constantly hiding behind irony.

I'd love a Sonic story where the characters have the emotional gravity of Frontiers and the plot of one of the Adventure games. Doesn't have to be anything special, just a solid story where interesting things happen and the characters react to them appropriately. After playing Psychonauts 2, I feel like Tim Schafer would probably make the kind of Sonic story I'd like to see
